Android 17 may transform phones into desktops when connected to external displays via USB-C.

It is likely to support floating, resizable app windows, taskbar, and three-button navigation.

It may debut with Android 17 on next-gen Pixel phones.

Google is reportedly working on a new Samsung DeX-like feature for Android phones. Once rolled out, the rumoured feature, Android Desktop Mode, is said to transform the respective devices into desktops when connected to an external display. The functionality was earlier said to arrive with Android 16; however, it is still under development and may debut next year on next-gen Pixel smartphones. Once rolled out, it will bring resizable app windows, a desktop-style taskbar, and multi-functionality.

For the uninitiated, Samsung DeX and Motorola Connect already offer similar features that allow users to mirror a desktop-like interface and access multiple apps. Users can even control everything with a keyboard and mouse.

Google’s Android Desktop mode: What is it and how it works

In a recent live stream on X (formerly Twitter), Mishaal Rahman has shared that Android will get a significant UI overhaul and a desktop mode. The same has also been confirmed by Android Authority. According to the report, a new “enable desktop experience features” toggle has been spotted on Pixel devices. When enabled, the functionality offers a desktop-like interface after the phone is connected to a laptop via USB Type-C. The taskbar and status bar seemingly appear on the screen with three-button navigation access and other options.

The rumoured feature is also said to offer access to multiple apps in floating windows. It is also expected to let users navigate between move, resize, or snap windows to the side.

Google was expected to introduce the Android Desktop mode on Android 16. However, Rahman said it will not arrive this year, as the tech giant may need more time to polish the interface. The tech giant may launch this with Android 17 on the next generation of Pixel phones.

Notably, Google is yet to confirm the feature officially.
