Samsung may replace the S26 Plus with an Edge variant.

Is 2025 the year of ultra-slim phones? Samsung recently launched the ultra-slim Galaxy S25 Edge, and Apple is expected to join the fray with the rumoured iPhone 17 Air. The newly launched Galaxy S25 Edge is just 5.8mm thick and weighs 163g, and the latter is said to be only 5.5mm thick. While Apple has not confirmed any details, rumours have circulated that the tech giant may discontinue the plus-sized models to make way for the thinner iPhone.

While these details have not been officially confirmed, here is what we know so far.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Edge may replace Plus variant in 2026

According to a recent report from The Elec, Samsung intends to discontinue the Plus variant in 2026 and replace it with the Galaxy S26 Edge. The Plus model is the least popular of the three Galaxy S models. According to the report, the Galaxy S25 Plus sold less than half as many units as the S25 or S25 Ultra, so the company may replace it with the new Edge model. However, it is also dependent on the market reaction.

Notably, the Galaxy S25 Edge has a 6.7-inch Quad-HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. It features a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and a dual rear camera setup with a 200MP primary sensor and a 12MP ultrawide lens.

Meanwhile, Apple is expected to replace the Plus model with an ultra-thin Air model, possibly measuring 5.5mm in thickness. The rumoured smartphone is expected to make compromises in terms of features such as camera sensors and battery capacity. The handset is expected to ship with a single camera sensor and a smaller battery. However, Apple is reportedly developing a new AI-powered battery optimisation feature that could extend battery life. In addition, the handset may have a 6.6-inch display with ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate.
