Google has begun rolling out the new AI Mode tab in Search in the United States. The company first announced this feature at the recent Google I/O, stating that the new feature will enable users to interact with its AI in real-time conversations. Backed by Project Astra, the same advanced AI engine behind Gemini Live, the AI mode in Google Search is being tested for both Android and iOS devices. The tech giant said that the new search feature will also let users ask complex and multi-part questions.
Here’s what we know about the Google Search AI mode.
According to a report by 9to5Google, the latest AI mode has been rolled out to select users in the US. Those who have received it can see a waveform icon under the Google Search bar, replacing the usual Google Lens shortcut. When tapped, it opens up a full-screen voice interface where users can ask questions to Google and get live responses.
It features a clean interface with light or dark themes, as well as a multicoloured waveform. Additionally, quick-access buttons for muting or switching to a transcript view have also been added. Notably, the new AI mode offers a carousel of web sources, enabling users to dig deeper. Users can even shoot follow-up questions to refine their queries.

Furthermore, users can also initiate Search Live conversations from the AI Mode by hitting a new circular button next to the input field. Not only this, but the new feature also has four customisable voice assistant options to choose from—Cosmo, Neso, Terra, and Cassini, that can be accessed through the settings menu. Notably, the Search Live is currently available through Search Labs, Google’s testing program for experimental features in the US.
